06-28-2004, 01:40 AM
Just thought it would be kinda cool to see how old everyone was when they began this hobby. Also what got you hooked on it? I'll start it off- I was about 12 (15 now) and i got the nicest radioshack car and thought it was pretty cool. Then my buddy showed me some real hobby grade cars and got me hooked! :D

I got my first hobby level rc when i was 11(i had rc's before just radioshack cars). It was a tamiya stadium blitzer, I saved up for an entire year for that truck.I remeber it was early may when i got the truck and i spent my next week after school putting it together.Once i got it together I must have put 15 packs a day through it.Im 19(well 18 till july 31st)now so that was 8 years ago. When i turned 14 i got my first nitro, It was a schumacher desert storm(1/10 stadium with .21 single speed).I must have babied it(never crashed but jumped a long ways)I never once broke a part or even fouled a glow plug for that matter.I had that truck untill i was 17(over 9 gallons through the thunder tiger .21).Untill i switched fuel that is,4 tanks later my engine was done.
A better question to ask is who still has there first rc? I do but i have no packs or charger anymore so its basicly a static model

06-28-2004, 06:16 AM
i was 9 years old when i bought my first real hobby level car, it was a tamiya 2wd buggy.

06-28-2004, 06:31 AM
When I was twelve my folks got a divorce and out of all the sadness and chaos that goes on when a family is split up my dad asked me what the thing I wanted most was.. and you guessed it it was a Tamya hot shot 4wd leccy buggy I loved that thing dearly I replaced so many motors and parts on that thing I wish I still had it 15yrs later I now have 5 Nitro RC cars and a 23cc RC boat..I have had planes also But cars and monster trucks are my absloute Pic of the RCs although the boat will be fun when I finish it..

06-28-2004, 07:56 AM
Geez, you guys are all young pups!

I got my first RC in my teens, back when the ONLY game in town was Tamiya. It was the Tyrell 6 wheel on-road car. This is back when the bodies of the cars looked very much like static models a also made of some hard plastic not lexan. So this is in the late 70s....

My first off-road buggy was the Tamiya Holiday buggy.

Then there were a few others too.

I even remember anxiously awaiting the release of the RC10....

06-28-2004, 08:01 AM
my first was a tamiya mad bull.

what got me into it was my uncle, he and my dad and their friends used to be really heavy into it around 85ish before i was born, but my uncle broke his leg and needed somthing to do, so he bought a kyosho hi-rider II from tower hobbies and he let me run that, afterwards i bought my madbull then traded it for a clodbuster BUAHAH!

06-28-2004, 12:55 PM
I had a Radioshack car many years ago. I can't even remember how old I was but I know I was in grade school. I will be 30 on July 9 and just ordered my first real RC today.

I remember growing up the Lawnmower place had some Tamiya models and they held races that I went to once in a while. I wanted one of those but could never afford one.

A couple of years ago I decided to buy one but my wife had other plans. I am soon to be divorced so I will soon have a RC.

06-28-2004, 01:25 PM

I've had radio shack cars since about as long as I can remember, got my first hobby-grade truck a couple years ago (stampede). I also have a hobby-grade sailboat I got a little longer ago.

I absolutely loved my radioshack cars, I know they can't compare to hobby grade but they really got me into the hobby! Lots of fun:)

06-28-2004, 07:11 PM
When I was 1 yr old. My dad chased me w/ a tank, until I became godzillia and got revenage on it. From then on, I can't remember a day that I didn't have a R/C of any kind. :p Guess I've been in this hobby for a very long time.

06-28-2004, 07:45 PM
I don't count Tyco R/C cars and Nikko cars I got since I was 3 as "got into RC".

My first real RC was for my 9th birthday, a Kyosho OUTLAW ST Stadium truck.

Had it original untill few years ago..

06-28-2004, 09:05 PM
I started with a Tamiya TL01 when I was around 8 years old.

I still have myu first ever RC that I got when I was 2 or 3. Its by Fisher Price, 2 speeds! Tops out around 5mph!

06-28-2004, 11:01 PM
Started when I was 12 years old with the OG Lunch Box. That was one sweet truck. Now I am 25 years young old. And have been more into it this year than any of my other years. Seen pretty much all kinds of RCers, But when HPI was born I bought there First RS4 and have never looked back on any other company. HPI way to go.

06-28-2004, 11:53 PM
My parents got me a traxxas rustler for my 8th birthday. Then I hopped it up. Then got an electric airplane when i was 11. Then I got a RC10GT kit with O.S. ..15 and an airtronics radio when I was 13 that I payed for with my detasling money. Now I have a savage .25 and I am 14 turning 15 in a month. I now am saving for a 1/8 scale buggy. I have a lot of yards to mow and detasling to do.

I got into R/C in Feburary this year...Yup a really over educated newbee with too much time and very little self control. I am 29 now and was 28 in Feb. I bought and sold a HPI Nitro Rush Evo....It was OK but was slow and no parts available. I have also had a HPI Micro RS4 fully upgraded, fun fun fun, but no where to run  ...Have since sold them both to buy the mother of all buggies the Kyosho Kanai 3 with an RB Concepts WS7 that makes me cringe when it flies by me on the track, this thing moves soooo stinkin' fast. Oh I also have a Kyosho Mini-Z MR-01 fully upgraded and a spare MR-01 for sale. Oops almost forgot My Factory Team TC3 that I race every Sunday...Man I have too many cars. Must be my old age....heheheheheheheh :) Can't keep track of them all.

06-29-2004, 02:29 PM
I started with radio shack rcs when i was 4 or 5 and a few years later moved onto a super blackfoot.

06-30-2004, 02:33 AM
I was 6 when i got my first RC10T2, played with it for a year or two...

In the middle of the year, I got into airsoft. I got a spring gun, and a gas gun. I was thinking about getting an electric gun, so I asked someone on the forum if i could use the batteries from my electrric car. I went down into the garage, charged up my battery, and i just happened to find my t2, and there i went.

I am 13, I have 2 Rc10t2's, 1 t-maxx, and 1 rc10-gt, all in 2 months work :)

06-30-2004, 06:29 AM

20 and a weird story- like 12 months ago! I started working at the hobby shop in the mall because of my knowledge of plastic models. I always ignored the r/c stuff (note our r/c department is really not that large or fantastic) but people always ask about it. Basically you have to learn the basics to work there. I mean this is in a shopping mall, not strip mall, so teenagers will come in all the time and ask "how fast, will it break, how fast, how fast..........." so you better be knowledgeable.

I bought my first vehicle, a T3 on ebay (becuase it came with everything I would need for an insane price, best money I ever spent and a 2wd electric ST is a great learning vehicle) and went on from there. Now I spend about 50-50 on time with r/c vs plastic models and a lot more on r/c in terms of money.

07-02-2004, 02:44 PM
i must admit,im pretty chuffed that alot of the RC pilots here are not kids.i was bit freaked out, as i am 25 and am spending money on what amounts to a toy!

I got my first RC one saturday when I was 12, which was an RC10GT. Then on christmas that same year, I got my 1st generation T-Maxx. Now, I'm working on a project which is shown in the General Discussion forum called "Diesel Toy".

07-03-2004, 01:51 PM
I got my first 'nitro' at around 10 to 15 yrs old(I can't remember).
1970-75 I think.
It was a Cox .049 Dune Buggy!
I had the Orange one & my buddy had the purple one. It wasn't radio controled, just adjust the fixed steering and slide the spur in to engage. I also had a Testors 3wheel ATC nitro .049(fixed steering) and the Cox .049 dragster on a tether which was very fast at the time. Not much car or truck r/c at the time. But Futaba was there with their big box transmitters for airplanes.
RC & nitro power has come a long way...

intersted at 5 when my older brother got a this car that was powered by a prop (funky thing), dad, uncle, and their friends all did control line planes, dad raced on-roads at local shop track. 7-9 helped dad build plane wings. 8 got a Nikko buggy for christmas, and kept stippin it apart tryin to make it better, lol, adding tires and stuff my would get from his buds. 8 1/2 - 9 got 1st hobby grade r/c, Tamiya MudBlaster truck (basicly same thing as the Hornet/Beetle/Bull/etc.), put it together myself, ran it for a long time, raced a couple times, then my brother drove into the pool, so i took his RC10 to school (and accidentlly ran it into an oncoming bus, lol), 10- Traxxas Bandit, 13- Kyo Outlaw Ultima ST, ran those for a few yrs, 15- something from Losi, and Assoc. dont remember the models, but do remember i didnt like em, so sold em to friends at school, 17- Rustler, 18- Nitro Rustler, 26 (now) waitin for my Revo to come in :D

07-04-2004, 04:19 AM

My Dad started me flying control line airplanes when I was 7. I got where I could fly the wheels off of those - bunch of us would gather on a Sat and dogfight all day (spent a lot of time getting things untwisted too, lol). I got my first rc airplane inbetween high school and college when I was 17. Put it together and flew it til I had to leave to go to college. My Dad sold it about 2 yrs later - I went to school year round and didn't come home for semester breaks cause I had a job in town where the college was and had to have the money to make ends meet.

Got into MTs when I was 52 - watched several running one day and it seemed like fun - I thought - good way to get back to RC planes. Having too much fun, no thoughts of buying a plane now, have 5 MTs, 2 1/8th buggys and 2 onroad 1/10th cars.
